The most recent patch to the battle-royale game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has brought in the change in positional sounds. This patch which released a week ago had not said anything about this change.

In PUBG, finding out the direction of shooting is easier now

The patch notes documented a few minor fixes and the arrival of new cosmetic items. However, players had this issue of audio problems. Turns out, it was intentional. Most people thought of it as a bug as PUBG has some irritating bugs in it. Now, PUBG Corp. has admitted that the system for positional audio has indeed seen some tweaks the studio failed to mention.

According to this developer update, the new system is a result of some newly-implemented functions for the game’s HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) plugin.

“We should have explained the change in the patch notes. We messed up here, and we hope you’ll accept our apology,” ―PUBG Developer
